A 30-year – old man, Chika Chukwumezie, committed suicide in the Anambra State Local Government Area behind his home at Ubahuekwem Ihiala.

The reason for Chukwumezie’s decision to take his own life was not established, but neighbors found his lifeless body hanging behind his house on an orange tree before raising the alarm.

A neighbor who spoke under secrecy to journalists because of the sensitivity of the matter said: “At midnight, the corpse was thrown into the thick forest. There are ongoing efforts to bring traditionalists to cut the orange tree and sanctify the compound.”

History has it, he says, that his uncle committed the same suicide at a young age about a century ago. He described the action as a community tabou and that to avert further calamity, the gods of the land must be appeased. Mr Haruna Mohammed, State Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), confirmed reporters with the incident.

“The police command started investigating the circumstances surrounding the young man’s suicide,” he said.
